We are a Church of England (Anglican) parish church. We worship in a traditional yet informal way We are an inclusive and welcoming church. Our congregation is almost as diverse as you'll find locally: from many parts of the world and from a wide range of backgrounds, regardless of age, race or sexuality. We are committed to caring for our local area. We support many voluntary groups, as well as getting involved in neighbourhood festivals and campaigns. We believe in acting out God's love in a lively and practical way in north London. Children are at the heart of our congregation and are made welcome in our services. The church also hosts a playgroup. We have strong links with St John's primary school, Highbury Vale. Our life with one another is not just on Sundays. We hold regular discussion groups and mid-week services, and we celebrate the great Christian festivals - whenever they fall. We're good at social events, to which all are welcome. Group Ministry St Thomas became part of a group ministry with the neighbouring parishes of St John Brownswood Park and St Mary Stoke Newington on 1st November 2011. We've been discussing something like this for over 20 years, but, because the other 2 parishes are in Hackney Deanery and Borough, whereas St Thomas is in Islington, it was thought a bit too complicated to arrange. Fortunately all objections have now been overcome. Finsbury Park is a place in its own right of which the parishes St John and St Thomas form the southern half, with Blackstock Road as our spine. Historically Brownswood Park has long been linked with the old borough of Stoke Newington, which became part of Hackney in 1960s'. Intermittently over the last 15 years St Mary and St John have been formally linked. We now have a great opportunity to work together and share resources for ministry and mission. The result will be very much what we make of it. If you want to find out about the other churches, St Mary has a website www.stmaryn16.org although St John does not yet. However, you can always find it via www.london.anglican.org or by looking at 'A church near you'. Watch this space for developments. |
